This exercise is a progression from the butterfly exercise, aimed at improving posture, core and turnout control. It's crucial to make sure that students are comfortable with the butterfly exercise before attempting this one. This particular exercise not only builds on ballet technique but also encourages creativity and expression through imagery.
Preparation: Make sure that the student is sitting on their mat with their feet resting on the fusion ball. Legs and feet are rotated to the students personal best. If the student has hyperextended knees adjust the fusion ball underneath the calf muscles, otherwise the heels are centre on the fusion ball.
Steps:
1. Encourage students to imagine themselves as butterflies going into a cocoon and then opening up again.
2. Start by moving the arms in a manner focusing on breathing through the fingers while feeling as if there are puppet strings pulling them.
3. Guide them to lean over their legs far as possible without compromising their posture. The port de bras moves into fifth position.
4. Instruct students to return to position by transitioning the arm movements while maintaining a long spine.
5. With a breath have them open their arms wide and move their legs into a rotated butterfly position.
Focus: Pay attention to maintaining posture with an elongated spine and proper leg rotation. Ensure that transitions between each position are smooth and controlled.
