This exercise focuses on the graceful flow of the waltz (valse) en tournant, emphasising the importance of "speaking with their feet" for students. This exercise introduces key concepts such as posing into an arabesque and rolling through the metatarsal during the return. It is designed to enhance students understanding of these fundamental ballet movements, ensuring they practice safe dance techniques while developing their fluidity and grace in waltz sequences.
Preparation: Start with students stepping with the left foot en croix into a pre-preparatory position (classical pose), ready to transition into movement.
Steps:
1. Have students begin by travelling diagonally to execute 2 waltz en tournant, focusing on the smoothness and fluidity of the turns.
2. Have students push from the final fondu into a posé arabesque, followed by chassé passé, emphasising the elegance of the pose and the control in the transition.
3. While travelling upstage, cue students to execute another 2 waltz en tournant, maintaining the graceful flow of movement.
4. Have students walk towards the opposite corner to prepare for the transition.
5. Guide students to step onto the right foot en croix into a pre-preparatory position, ready to repeat the sequence on the alternate side.
6. If applicable, have the alternate group of students commence the sequence to ensure everyone gets practice time.
Focus: Emphasise the importance of maintaining correct alignment, especially during the arabesque pose and metatarsal roll, to ensure safety and precision.
