This is particularly advantageous in activities, like dance, that demand exertion.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) can be introduced to students as 5 years old, provided they show the necessary concentration and interest. However, it's more common for the PBT program to start at the junior level, typically around the age of 6. This age is often considered ideal due to the following reasons;Development of Concentration: By the age of 6, most children have improved their ability to concentrate and focus, which is crucial for engaging with PBT exercises and understanding its principles.Physical Readiness: At this stage, children are generally physically prepared for physical activities. PBT exercises are designed to be suitable for their age and can aid in developing muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility.Introduction to Ballet Fundamentals: Starting PBT at the sub-junior level aligns with children's initiation into formal ballet training. It can complement their ballet classes by reinforcing skills and techniques in an environment.Building a Foundation for Future Training: Early exposure to PBT establishes a groundwork for training as students progress further. It helps develop body awareness, alignment, and discipline – all of which are essential in any dance form.Adaptability to Young Learners: Overall, introducing Progressing Ballet Technique at a stage provides benefits that support young learners' growth in ballet while nurturing their passion for dance.The PBT program for kids is designed to match their learning styles and physical abilities, making sure that the activities are enjoyable, beneficial, and easy to participate in.To summarize, while it's possible to introduce PBT at 5 years old for children who can concentrate well enough, most kids usually start around the age of 6. This timing aligns with the stage of sub-junior level children, making it an appropriate time to begin their PBT journey.
Managing multiple ages and levels in a single PBT class, like combining Junior and Senior students, is quite feasible and not a problem with effective planning. Simply split the class into two groups. Start with exercises common to both levels, like "turnout," and use the same music to maintain a cohesive class flow. Though this requires a bit of extra class planning, each exercise is designed to progress and relate across levels, making it entirely possible to cater to different ages and skills in one session efficiently.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) offers an approach that complements ballet training, providing dancers with valuable tools. What makes PBT stand out from ballet classes are its features;

Unique Exercise Regimen: PBT incorporates exercises not commonly found in ballet classes. These exercises focus on isolating and strengthening muscle groups, enhancing flexibility, and improving overall body alignment and posture.

These props add a dimension to the training experience.These tools bring an element to training, helping to improve core stability, balance, and coordination.
A Comprehensive Approach to Ballet Technique: PBT takes an approach by not only focusing on the physical aspects of ballet technique but also enhancing body awareness and control. This holistic approach greatly contributes to a dancer's skill and confidence.
In conclusion, PBT stands apart from ballet training as a tool that specifically targets muscle memory. It incorporates an increase in exercise difficulty. Utilizes unique exercises and props to enhance ballet technique. This makes PBT an effective and distinctive addition to a dancer's training routine.

The main distinction between a teacher membership and a student membership on PBT online lies in the content and resources available to each group.
Both teacher and student memberships grant access to our extensive collection of PBT video tutorials and follow-along classes. However, the teacher membership offers benefits;
Extra Tutorials for Teachers: Teacher members have access to supplementary tutorials specifically designed for their needs. These tutorials cover concepts and teaching methodologies essential for effectively guiding students in PBT.

No, having a certification in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) does not mean that you can certify teachers. The certification is intended to equip you with the skills and knowledge to teach the PBT program effectively to students. It validates your expertise in PBT techniques and methods allowing you to provide training to dancers. However, it doesn't include the authority or responsibility of training or certifying PBT instructors. PBT officials and trainers solely manage that aspect.
The reason behind the requirement for teachers of Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) to renew their certification annually is to keep the certified teachers' directory updated with those currently actively involved in teaching PBT. This yearly renewal process ensures that a high standard of teaching is maintained within the PBT community and guarantees that students seeking PBT instruction are connected with instructors who not only hold certification but also actively practice and improve their PBT teaching skills. The renewal process has been designed to be simple. It doesn't consume too much time, consisting of just a few essential questions to verify your continued engagement in teaching PBT. This approach helps maintain the quality and relevance of the certified teacher's directory for both teachers and students.
No, there is no requirement for you to make any payment for the renewal of your certification with PBT. Our objective is to offer students an up-to-date resource for finding PBT teachers and accurately portray the PBT teaching community.

Absolutely, you can definitely record yourself performing the exercises for the assessments. However, it's important to remember that your video submissions should not solely focus on demonstrating the exercises. It's equally crucial to showcase your understanding of how to teach them. When creating your videos, imagine yourself instructing as if you were the student. Provide verbal instructions, cues, and corrections as in a real teaching scenario. The assessment team will evaluate your teaching methodology, comprehension of the exercises, and your ability to communicate and demonstrate these techniques effectively. This approach will truly highlight your skills as a PBT teacher.
While it is ideal to have a student who's similar in age to the level you are teaching, it is not absolutely necessary. If you choose to demonstrate the exercises using a student or even yourself for all levels, what really matters is adapting your teaching language to match the age group of the level. Make sure that your verbal cues, corrections, and instructions are suitable and relatable for the age group you are teaching. This shows your ability to adjust your teaching approach in order to effectively communicate and connect with students of all ages, which is a vital skill in providing effective PBT instruction.
Certainly, feel free to respond to the assessments in your language. Even though the questions for the PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) assessments are available in English, Spanish, or Chinese (Mandarin), you have the option to submit your answers and videos in any language that you find convenient. When we review your submissions, we will utilize a translator to comprehend and evaluate your responses accurately.
Once you've submitted your application for PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) certification, please allow us a period of up to 7 days to process and review it. Our team works diligently to thoroughly assess each application, ensuring we evaluate your skills and comprehensive understanding of the PBT program. We appreciate your patience during this time. Assure you that we are committed to providing a prompt and detailed response. If you have any questions or concerns while waiting for your certification results, please don't hesitate to reach out to us for assistance.
To get the results with Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), it is generally suggested to practice PBT two to three times per week. This consistency is crucial for reinforcing muscle memory and enhancing strength and flexibility. It's important to keep in mind that everyone has needs and schedules, so it's always an idea to listen to your body and adjust your practice frequency based on your own comfort level and progress. Regular and consistent sessions are the way to reap the benefits of PBT fully.
If you happen to have ankles there are exercises using PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) that can greatly help in strengthening them. It's important to start and prioritize control and proper form as you engage in these exercises. As your ankle strength improves, you can gradually increase the intensity.
One effective set of exercises involves using a resistance band. By moving your feet and ankles against the resistance provided by the band, you can strengthen the muscles surrounding your ankles. Pointing and flexing your feet against the band is a way to work on this.
Another set of exercises focuses on foot articulation. These movements are designed to improve both the range of motion and strength in your ankles. They often involve controlled movements without any added resistance, which helps enhance articulation and strength in these areas.
Remember to listen to your body throughout these exercises and avoid overexertion. If you experience any discomfort or pain, it's best to stop and seek advice from a healthcare professional or a dance instructor who can offer guidance based on your condition. They will ensure that you exercise safely and effectively.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) proves effective for addressing concerns related to hypermobility. This program takes measures to cater specifically to individuals with this condition;
Controlled Movements: PBT places emphasis on controlled movements. For dancers with hypermobility, this focus becomes vital in maintaining positions and preventing overextension.
Stability Exercises: The program incorporates targeted exercises that aim to enhance stability. This aspect is particularly advantageous for individuals with hypermobility, who often encounter challenges regarding stability.
Isometric and Isotonic Exercises: PBT combines both exercises ( muscle contractions) and isotonic exercises (dynamic muscle movements). These exercises play a role in building strength and muscle control around the joints, which proves essential for those with hypermobility.
Precision Focus: PBT's precise nature ensures that movements go beyond range; they prioritize accuracy and quality well. This approach helps individuals with hypermobility develop proprioception and control over their movements.
Injury Risk Reduction: By strengthening the muscles surrounding the joints, improving control, and enhancing stability, PBT effectively decreases the risk of injuries commonly associated with hypermobility—such as dislocations and sprains.
Promoting Safety in Dance: PBT's methodical approach guarantees that dancers with hypermobility can engage in their art with safety and efficiency, minimizing the chances of overuse injuries and strain on their joints.
To put it simply PBT tackles hypermobility concerns by emphasizing controlled and stable movements as incorporating strengthening exercises. This methodology aids in stabilizing the joints, improving muscle control, and fostering a more effective dance practice for those with hypermobility.
Yes, it is perfectly safe for a student with scoliosis to participate in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) exercises as long as certain modifications and supports are implemented. PBT is specifically designed to be adaptable. It can accommodate individuals with physical conditions, including scoliosis.Customizable Exercises: PBT provides flexibility in its exercises, allowing them to be adjusted according to the comfort level and physical limitations of each individual with scoliosis.Support Beneath the Sacrum: During exercises that involve bridging positions, one can strategically place one's hand underneath the sacrum for added support. This modification helps align the spine, which is particularly important for students with scoliosis.Adapting to Thoracic Curvature: If a student has curvature in the thoracic area of their back, lying supine (on their back) may cause discomfort. In some cases, placing a pillow underneath the back can provide relief by maintaining a neutral spine position and reducing discomfort.Utilizing the Backalast Jacket: The Backalast Jacket is a support designed specifically for use during PBT practice. It offers support for the back, which can be highly beneficial for individuals dealing with scoliosis.The jacket plays a role in ensuring that your posture and alignment remain in check while performing PBT exercises, which ultimately helps minimize the chances of experiencing strain or injury.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) suggests that it is safer for young dancers to delay Pointe training until they reach the age of 11 or older. There are reasons behind this recommendation;
1. Bone Development: The bones in a child's feet are still. Developing before the age of 11, making them more vulnerable to injuries. Pointe work puts a lot of pressure on the toes and feet. If the bones are not fully developed, it can lead to long-term foot problems, deformities, and growth plate injuries.
2. Muscle and Ligament Strength: Pointe work requires strength in the feet, ankles, and legs. Young dancers usually haven't built up the muscle and ligament strength to handle the demands of Pointe work. Without strength, they have a risk of strains, sprains, and other injuries.
3. Technique and Experience: PBT emphasizes that dancers should have three years of ballet training before attempting Pointe work. This ensures that they have a foundation in ballet technique, including alignment, balance, and control, which are crucial for executing Pointe work.
4. Pre Pointe Exercises: PBT incorporates pointe exercises into its curriculum as part of the preparation process for Pointe work. These exercises aim to enhance strength and flexibility, for Pointe work focusing on strengthening the muscles in the feet, ankles, legs, and core. Additionally, they aim to improve balance and alignment. These exercises are meant to prepare dancers' bodies for Pointe work by reducing the risk of injury.
5. Physical Development: Besides bone growth, other factors like stability, coordination, and overall physical strength also contribute to development. Younger children usually continue developing in these areas.
6. Emotional. Discipline: Engaging in Pointe work demands a level of discipline and body awareness. Dancers must closely follow instructions while being mindful of their body's limitations. Emotional maturity is crucial for managing the sometimes painful training involved in Pointe work.
1. Doctor's Approval: The first and most important step is to obtain clearance from your doctor. This usually comes after the phase of the injury, where rest and necessary medical interventions take priority. When the doctor confirms that your condition is stable enough, you should consider starting rehabilitation.
2. Intervention: In cases, it can be advantageous to begin physical therapy early for musculoskeletal injuries like a labral hip tear. Initially, the focus may be on exercises that don't involve bearing weight, with an emphasis on managing pain and reducing inflammation.
3. Customized Program: Your physical therapy program should be tailored to suit your needs. As your therapist, I would first concentrate on exercises designed to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Over time the program would gradually incorporate exercises aimed at improving the hip range of motion, strength, and stability. It's crucial that these exercises are adjusted based on how you respond to therapy.
4. Supplementary Training: Including low-impact activities as part of your recovery process can be beneficial. Activities such as swimming or cycling are choices as they put a strain on the hip joint while allowing for conditioning and movement without aggravating the injury.
5. Making Adjustments to Exercise Intensity and Technique: Depending on how you're progressing and the level of discomfort you're experiencing, it may be necessary to make adjustments to the intensity and technique of exercises. For example, we might need to lower the height at which you perform leg lifts. As your therapist, my role would be to guide you through these modifications in a way that aligns with your healing process.
6. Discussing the Impact of Overstretching: It's important for us to have a conversation about whether overstretching or specific movements could have played a part in causing your tear. Understanding these factors is crucial when customizing your rehabilitation plan and preventing any injuries.
Tibial torsion refers to a condition where the shin bones twist, which can impact ballet dancers' alignment and movement. PBT exercises aim to improve proprioception, muscle memory, and alignment, all of which play a role in managing torsion.
1. Scissor Twist Exercises with the Fusion Ball: These exercises involve twisting movements that can enhance the flexibility and strength of the legs, helping students with tibial torsion. The fusion balls' texture against the calf muscles also improves proprioception, making dancers more aware of their leg alignment and rotation.
2. Bridge in Position Amendment with Stress Ball or Rolled Up Socks: In this exercise, you perform a bridge (a backbend with feet and hands on the floor) while positioning your feet in position (one foot in front of the other with heels touching the opposite foots’ toes). To add a challenge and promote muscle engagement and proprioception in the lower legs, hold a stress ball or roll up socks between your calves. This exercise can be particularly helpful for correcting any misalignments caused by torsion.
Understanding Your Health Condition: Before participating in any PBT classes, it is crucial for students with hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) to receive a diagnosis. It is important to have an understanding of your needs and limitations.
Tailored PBT Program: Once you have been diagnosed, the PBT program can be customized according to your requirements. Our approach focuses on modifying exercises rather than strictly following routines. This modification is essential to ensure a beneficial experience.
Avoiding Band Usage: For individuals with these conditions, we advise against using resistance bands during exercises. The use of bands in PBT exercises may pose risks or discomfort due to the challenges posed by hypermobility and related syndromes.
Intensity: We recommend performing movements with intensity. This approach helps manage your condition while minimizing the risk of injury or strain.
No Emphasis on Stretching: Stretching exercises are generally not recommended for students with hypermobility, EDS, or POTS. Overstretching can worsen these conditions. It should be avoided. Instead, the focus will be on strengthening and stability exercises.
Although it is not possible to change a student's bone structure, participating in core exercises for their age can greatly assist in attaining safer alignment during training sessions. These exercises work on strengthening and stabilizing the muscles around the core, leading to improved posture balance and reduced strain on the back.
It's crucial to prioritize safety and allow healing when dealing with a stress fracture in the foot. During the recovery phase, there are exercises in PBT (Progressive Ballet Technique) that can be performed without putting weight on the injured foot. Remember to keep the injured foot relaxed and avoid any exercises that involve wrapping or direct pressure on it until it's completely healed. In the meantime, you can focus on conditioning areas such as your core, hamstrings, back, and glutes. Always listen to your body. Seek guidance from a healthcare professional to ensure that your training aligns with your healing process.
We offer class plans that serve as a guide. If you prefer to create your own, we recommend following this formula;
1. Warm-Up Routine: Start each class with one of our PBT up exercises. This initial phase is crucial for preparing your body, increasing blood flow, and reducing the risk of injuries. The warm-up should be gentle. Focus on activating the muscle groups that will be used throughout the class.
2. Strengthening Your Core: After warming up, transition into exercises specifically designed to target core strength. A strong core is essential in ballet, as it provides stability and control for movements. Include exercises that challenge and enhance the muscles, obliques, and lower back.
3. Enhancing Turnout and Upper Back Strength: Following the core segment, focus on exercises that improve turnout (rotation of the legs from the hips) and strengthen the upper back. These areas are crucial for ballet dancers as a developed turnout and a strong upper back are vital for proper ballet technique.
4. Refining Arm Movements, with Port de Bras Exercises: Incorporate port de bras exercises to refine arm movements and enhance body gracefulness. This segment will assist students in developing expressive arm movements, which are essential aspects of ballet aesthetics.
5. Working on Adage: Proceed with adage exercises. Adage involves controlled movements that require strength, balance, and fluidity. This part of the class is crucial for developing the control and precision for ballet.
6. Focus on Feet and Allegro: Give attention to exercises that focus on the feet as you near the end of the class. Having flexible feet is vital for pointe work and intricate footwork. Follow this with allegro exercises, which involve lively movements as they help build stamina and agility.
7. Cool Down and Stretching: Wrap up the class with a cool down and stretching session. This part is essential for muscle recovery, improving flexibility, and preventing injuries. It also aids in relaxing both the body and mind after a workout.
8. Repetition and Music Integration: Emphasize the importance of repetition throughout the class, especially when addressing areas where students may have weaknesses. Regular repetition plays a role in building muscle memory and mastering techniques. Furthermore, integrating music into your exercises enhances rhythm and musicality—two aspects of ballet.
Remember to strike a balance between providing challenges and setting goals in each class while considering your student's individual needs and skill levels. By embracing this organized strategy, you will guarantee an impactful ballet class that nurtures your students' progress and advancement in the realm of ballet.
Although we generally advise practicing Level 1 for at least 6 months before progressing to the next level, we recognize that teachers may wish to capitalize on current workshop schedules. If you are considering participating in Level 2 or Level 3 workshops, it requires a minimum of 3 months of qualification in Level 1 and active practice of the program.
If you have any questions about managing multiple workshop levels or need help with registration, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Often this is gas escaping from the joint capsule and will create a pop sound when performing large hip movements. If this is accompanied with pain, then it is important to stop immediately and seek advice from a physiotherapist or PT.
Note: Always take time to warm up the hips with PBT exercises before any class, students that perform large movements without being warm will often experience this pop or snapping noise.
Strengthening the deep rotators and your core will help with your turnout. We recommend practising all exercises within our Core & Posture as well as Turnout Categories in our online training platform.
It is extremely important to ensure you are not forcing turnout through ‘tucking the pelvis’. A neutral position for the pelvis is far more important than the extent of your turnout.
Often during growth spurts the patella ligament that is linked to the tibia can become irritated and inflamed however, as PBT is mostly non weight-bearing it is safe to practise the program. This will help students with their muscle strength during this time of growth.
One important exercise is entitled ‘Knee Health’ which is found in our ‘teacher resources category’ within each level. It is highly recommended for students to practise this exercise each day during this period.
As this is inflammation of the tendons, you have probably been advised to cut back on your dancing. However you can still practise everything in PBT to work on your strength during this period as it is non weight-bearing however, we would recommend to not engage in the foot wrapping exercises.
Firstly I suggest you practise PBT in a Backalast jacket for full support. Our ‘shoulder stability’ exercises found in the Senior and Advanced levels of PBT will be a great asset for you to strengthen all of your muscles around the shoulder grille.
To effectively practice Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), you'll need essential pieces of equipment:1. Exercise Ball (Fit Ball): This tool in PBT is available in various sizes depending on your height and the specific exercise. It plays a role in many PBT routines.2. Fusion Balls: Some exercises require up to three fusion balls, which are smaller than the exercise ball and used for more targeted movements.3. Resistance Band: A 3-meter long and 15-cm wide resistance band is recommended for PBT. A medium-strength band works well for exercises. However, younger students under 8 years old may benefit from using a light-strength resistance band to accommodate their developing strength and coordination.In addition to these essentials, there are equipment pieces utilized for specific exercises;1. Massage Ball (Lacrosse Ball): Certain routines incorporate this ball for targeted muscle relief and activation.2. Mini Loop Bands: These bands add resistance and challenge to exercises within the routine.These equipment pieces are specifically designed to enhance the effectiveness of PBT exercises by promoting strength development, flexibility improvement, and proper ballet technique.Selecting the sizes and resistance levels is crucial to meet your requirements and achieve optimal outcomes during your PBT practice.

It is essential to avoid using weighted balls in any part of the Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) programs. Including a weighted fit ball could strain the body during lifting, which goes against the safety principles of PBT.Furthermore, the methodology of PBT focuses on utilizing the body's muscles to maintain stability with a regular fit ball placed on the floor. Introducing a ball often filled with sand or other materials for stability contradicts this core principle. In PBT, the emphasis lies on developing muscle control and stability rather than relying on external weights to stabilize the ball. Therefore, it is crucial to adhere to the recommended equipment guidelines for PBT to ensure both safety and effectiveness during training.
Studios that incorporate Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) into their classes or offer PBT classes usually have different ways of organizing the necessary equipment to meet their student's needs. Here's how they typically handle it;
Personal Equipment: Some studios encourage students to have their own PBT equipment. In some cases, the studios often provide pumps in dressing rooms or accessible areas so that students can inflate their exercise balls as required.
Shared Equipment: Many studios opt to purchase a range of ball sizes to cater to students of varying heights and sizes. This approach ensures that all students can access equipment for their PBT classes.
Storage Solutions: To manage the storage of these balls, studios often install wall mounts strategically in areas like studios, hallways, or dressing rooms. This not only keeps the balls out of the way when not in use but also makes them easily accessible during classes.
By adopting one or a combination of these methods, studios can effectively. Handle PBT equipment, ensuring that every student has what they need for a successful PBT session. Each studio chooses the approach that best suits its space, resources, and student body preferences.

This breakthrough signifies advancements in dancewear and signals a revolution as the Backalast becomes an indispensable tool for dancers and anyone looking to improve their posture training effectiveness and overall performance.
The Backalast jacket is designed to fit for effective posture correction. It should take some effort to zip it up, indicating that it is providing the pressure. If you can zip up the jacket easily without effort, it might be too big. If you can't zip it up at all or feel uncomfortable beyond a snug and compressive fit you might need a larger size. Please reach out to customerservice@pbt.dance, for assistance and discussion.
The Backalast is intentionally designed to have a fit, but it also has the ability to stretch in all directions and then compress, ensuring that it molds comfortably to your body without restricting your movements. This means that you can enjoy freedom of movement while engaging in various activities.
To start with, it is recommended to wear your Backalast jacket for an hour. This initial period allows your body to adjust to the fit and functionality of the jacket. As time goes on, you can gradually extend the duration of wearing it over three months as your body becomes more familiar with the jacket. While some dancers, teachers, and experienced users comfortably wear their jackets for up to four hours, it's important to increase wearing time to ensure both comfort and effectiveness.
